Melissa officinalis, Lemon Balm’s botanical name is derived from melissa the Greek word for honey bee (Apis Meliffera). As a member of the mint or Lamiaceae family it attracts many bees to its small but nectar laden flowers. The delicately lemon scented leaves are used to make a realxing tea, flavor wine and beer and are used in cooking. Its flavor comes from the terpenes citronellal, citronellol, citral and geraniol. And there’s a story behind this cream and the name Malta. Malta belonged to the four-legged group of earth beings, more specifically of the bovine group. She was a well-loved school cow. Malta lived permanently on a school farm in Santa Rosa California where a multitude of children, a dedicated farmer and an entire community of people cared for her. One day she got caught on a barbed wire fence and tore her flesh. The wound wouldn’t heal. The worried farmer called the vet who cleaned the wound and administered ointments but it just did not get better.

As members of the community and dedicated fans of Malta, we volunteered to create an ointment in the hopes of speeding her recovery and relieving her suffering. We created a cream made from clay to draw out the problem; aloe to sooth the area and herbal oils to stimulate tissue improvement. The wound got better and the area was left as good as new. Malta has since made the journey to the greenest pasture in the sky after a long life with exceptionally good skin but her legacy remains in this cream named after her.

Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, small animals and woodlands, was also the goddess of childbirth, midwives and protectress of infants and young girls. The white under sides of the leaves of Artemisia shimmer in the moonlight thus its association with dreams and intuition as well as artistic pursuits and creativity, that which happens unseen and ‘in the dark’.

Mugwort herb has been used traditionally for protection and magic. The leaves are bitter and aromatic enhancing digestion when used in small amounts. Feminine conditions such as menstrual cramps and menopause benefit from Artemisia; although it is not to be used internally during pregnancy as its stimulating and warming properties may interfere with the pregnancy. The herb oil used topically warms and stimulates the circulation when used for massage and has traditionally been used to calm tremors.
