Hydrosols, also called distilates, are created during the distillation process of essential oil production. The fragrant essential oil separates from the water element. Hydrosols carry the delicate scent and skin benefits of the plant material. It is, essentially, pure water extracted from the plant. Hydrosol are hydrating and slightly acidic helping to preserve and protect the skins acid mantle while infusing the pores and cells with moisture.

Hydration keeps the skin taught, healthy and smooth. Moisturizers contain a blend of oils and waters. The oil element creates a protective barrier that locks in moisture. Hydrosols are fragrant distilled waters that carry the properties of the plants used in the distillation process. All our toners and splashes are made from hydrosols. We never use alcohol or alcohol based astringents in any of our products.

Melissa officinalis, Lemon Balm’s botanical name is derived from melissa the Greek word for honey bee (Apis Meliffera). As a member of the mint or Lamiaceae family it attracts many bees to its small but nectar laden flowers. The delicately lemon scented leaves are used to make a realxing tea, flavor wine and beer and are used in cooking. Its flavor comes from the terpenes citronellal, citronellol, citral and geraniol. Citral has been demonstrated in studies to be anti-viral and in Germany it is used in creams and ointments to treat herpes and other viral skin conditions.

Our Digestive Bitters have proven themselves to be an excellent natural sleep aid when taken before going to bed. The Bitters have helped customers who have had difficulty falling asleep for years and it helps improve their digestion as a side benefit. ARTEMISIA OIL (Mugwort) Artemis was the Greek goddess of the hunt, small animals and the woodlands and, the goddess of childbirth, midwives and the protectress of infants and young girls. She ruled the Moon opposite her brother Apollo who ruled the sun. The silvery leaves of the Artemisia plant evoke the dream state and represent intuition, creativity and artistic pursuits. On a moonlit night, the white and silver leaves shimmer in the pale glow.

The traditional use of Artemisia, also called Mugwort is steeped in the traditions of the feminine. This stimulating oil helps relieve menstrual cramps and menopausal symptoms creating a sense of warmth and balance.

USE: Apply topically on areas experiencing cramping or discomfort to increase circulation or rub a light layer all over for a gently stimulate and warm the body. Traditionally, Artemisia oil was used to calm tremors.

CAUTION: Avoid Artemisia oil both internally and externally during pregnancy as the stimulating properties can interfere with the natural process.

The Shea Butter used by SOLUM&HERBE comes from the ADagomba Ah Shayh Women’s Cooperative in Ghana, where they harvest and process the nuts of the Shea tree in the traditional manner.
