MILFOIL (YARROW) SALVE 1 oz MILFOIL, or Yarrow, Achillea millefolium, means ‘thousand leaved’. Achilles was said to have used Yarrow to staunch the bleeding of his soldiers’ wounds. Common names also include Staunch weed and Soldier’s Woundwort because of its reputation for stopping the bleeding of a fresh wound. Used on bruises, burns, wounds, nerve pain and varicosities, the salve’s healing, astringent and pain relieving properties will help restore the skin to a healthy state. Yarrow is heat dispersing and energetically protective.

Melissa officinalis, Lemon Balm’s botanical name is derived from melissa the Greek word for honey bee (Apis Meliffera). The delicately lemon scented leaves are used to make a realxing tea, flavor wine and beer and are used in cooking. Its flavor comes from the terpenes citronellal, citronellol, citral and geraniol. Citral has been demonstrated in studies to be anti-viral and in Germany it is used in creams and ointments to treat herpes and other viral skin conditions.

She ruled the Moon while her brother Apollo, ruled the Sun. The white under sides of the leaves of Artemisia shimmer in the moonlight thus its association with dreams and intuition as well as artistic pursuits and creativity, that which happens unseen and ‘in the dark’.

Mugwort herb has been used traditionally for protection and magic. The leaves are bitter and aromatic enhancing digestion when used in small amounts. Feminine conditions such as menstrual cramps and menopause benefit from Artemisia; although it is not to be used internally during pregnancy as its stimulating and warming properties may interfere with the pregnancy. The herb oil used topically warms and stimulates the circulation when used for massage and has traditionally been used to calm tremors.
