Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, small animals and woodlands, was also the goddess of childbirth, midwives and protectress of infants and young girls. She ruled the Moon while her brother Apollo, ruled the Sun. The white under sides of the leaves of Artemisia shimmer in the moonlight thus its association with dreams and intuition as well as artistic pursuits and creativity, that which happens unseen and ‘in the dark’.

Mugwort herb has been used traditionally for protection and magic. The leaves are bitter and aromatic enhancing digestion when used in small amounts. Feminine conditions such as menstrual cramps and menopause benefit from Artemisia; although it is not to be used internally during pregnancy as its stimulating and warming properties may interfere with the pregnancy. The herb oil used topically warms and stimulates the circulation when used for massage and has traditionally been used to calm tremors.
